The Development of the Characters of Lady Wisdom and Dame Folly in Judaic Literature

Author
Ananda B. Geyser-Fouché

Synopsis

This book offers a significant contribution to the study of Judaic wisdom literature by engaging a broad corpus of texts and providing in-depth analysis and contextual comparison.

It presents a comprehensive catalogue of texts from the Judaic tradition that personify wisdom and/or folly, and offers detailed intertextual and extratextual analysis of each. Through this approach, the study advances scholarly discussions around the characters and attributes associated with wisdom and folly, tracing their development and exploring their conceptual function within varying literary and historical contexts.

It features two appendices in which the author provides an English interpretation or translation of Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek texts. Appendix 1 deals with texts with nonpersonified wisdom attributes, and Appendix 2 deals with texts which have utilised personified wisdom or folly.

To the best of the author’s knowledge, no prior study has examined this wide array of texts in a single, unified work. Nor has there been a sustained or detailed exploration of the development of Lady Wisdom and Dame Folly across the Judaic literary tradition. This study also uniquely connects changes in the portrayal of these figures to shifts in context and ideology.

By offering an extensive examination of the Lady metaphor in Judaic literature and its evolution over time, this book is an essential resource for scholars and students in Old Testament Studies, Second Temple Judaism and Biblical Studies.
